View full detailsPressing weight away from the chest is the movement. What actually differs between machines is which part of the chest the angle targets, how the resistance loads, and whether both arms are locked together or move on their own.
A flat press targets the chest evenly across the whole muscle. An incline press shifts the emphasis toward the upper chest and front shoulders, which is the area a flat press tends to undertrain. A decline press does the opposite, emphasizing the lower chest. A facility that only has room for one usually goes flat first, since it covers the broadest range of the muscle. Incline and decline are additions once the basics are covered, not replacements for a flat press.
A selectorized chest press uses a pin in a weight stack, so adjusting resistance takes a second between users. A plate loaded version uses standard weight plates on a peg, which raises the ceiling on resistance and tends to hold up well under constant heavy use. Selectorized suits a facility with fast turnover. Plate loaded suits members who are routinely pressing past what a fixed stack tops out at.
Several machines below use an iso-lateral setup, where each arm presses independently instead of both sides being locked to one bar. That means a stronger side can't compensate for a weaker one the way it can on a fixed-bar press. It's worth knowing this trains differently than a standard chest press, not just with a different handle, and it matters most for a facility working with members recovering from an injury or correcting a real strength imbalance between sides.
The questions people usually have before choosing between these machines.
Flat is the standard starting point since it works the chest across the broadest range. Incline adds emphasis on the upper chest and shoulders, and decline adds emphasis on the lower chest. If you're only outfitting one chest press station, flat covers the most ground.
Selectorized machines change resistance with a pin in a weight stack, which is fast between users. Plate loaded machines use standard weight plates on a peg, letting stronger users load heavier and tending to hold up well under constant use. Selectorized suits quick turnover, plate loaded suits a strength-focused facility.
It means each arm presses independently rather than both being fixed to one bar. That prevents a stronger side from taking over the movement, which is useful for correcting an imbalance or working around an injury on one side. It's a genuinely different exercise than a fixed-bar press, not just a different grip.
For most commercial and home settings, a mid-range stack covers the large majority of users comfortably. Go higher only if members are regularly training past that point. Extra capacity you'll never use just adds cost and floor space without adding real value.
